I’m Andi! I’m 30 (about to be 31) years old. Originally from Arkansas but I’ve lived in Denton for about 7 years now. I’ve been teaching yoga for almost a year and it’s the best ”job” I’ve ever had. I also own The Colour Bar Salon with my wife. We have two weenie dogs and a cat. We both really love Denton and are happy to call it home!
Tell me about your yoga practice!
I mostly like to practice and teach chair yoga and gentle yoga. I also really enjoy stretching classes like YIN. My style of yoga in general is a slower approach.
How long have you been practicing yoga?
Off and on throughout the years I would take a class here and there at a gym or yoga studio but consistently for about a year and a half. And that’s mostly due to finding a studio that I felt comfortable with and able to explore on the mat without judgment.
Why did you decide it was time to take YTT?
It literally just fell into my lap like a sign from the universe! I became an instructor during a kind of cross roads time in my life after getting laid off from my corporate job of 5 years. I wanted to find a career where I was actually helping people and making a difference in their lives. My past career was a bad fit for me and wasn’t fulfilling. I fell into the niche of chair yoga and gentle yoga out of realizing how beneficial it could be to the older community or those with limited mobility. My B.S. is in Human Development and gerontology. As cheesy as it sounds I felt like all the stars aligned and presented me with what I needed to do. I love working with people who might not have ever tried yoga had I not been there to say, hey, look you can do this too! Yoga is for everyone!
Why did you want to become an instructor?
To help people discover that yoga is literally for every single body type. The benefits are immense and if you can breathe, you can do yoga. I truly enjoy helping people. I find my career as an instructor to be super rewarding.
Tell me about your teaching style!
I mostly teach chair yoga and gentle flow classes. I use ALL the props! Chairs, bolsters, blocks, straps, exercise balls. And I’m constantly looking for new ways to modify poses so that every body type can benefit from them. I feel like making sure that students feel comfortable and confident with their practice is my main goal. My favorite thing to hear is how someone feels better at the end of class than they did at the start!
what have you been doing since YTT?
Teaching 5 classes at Pure Synergy, Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, and Yoga Flow. As well as a couple classes at Assisted Living and Active Living senior communities. I’ve also been continuing my education through a chair yoga certification, which I just recently finished up, and a gentle yoga certification that I’m currently working towards!
