Halloween Habits

Halloween is just around the corner and whether you’re dressing up, watching spooky movies, or decorating the front yard to be a graveyard, there is one thing that many people do on this holiday….eat SUGAR! It may seem very tempting to eat all the sugary sweets and candy that is offered during this time of year, but I’d like to shed some light on how you can still treat yourself this Halloween and have mindful eating habits.

I want to address that it is completely okay for us to treat ourselves to a yummy treat once in a while. It is important to distinguish what is eating sugar in moderation and what is eating sugar in extreme amounts. On that note, most candy out there has refined sugars, corn syrup and/or high-fructose corn syrup. The reason why we commonly see these ingredients is because it is cheap to produce and is can be used in many different products such as processed foods, baked goods, soft drinks, and of course, Halloween candy. These ingredients are definitely not the best for our health and can actually age the human body faster, but do not worry there are healthy alternatives! You can use natural sweaters to make spooky treats and when it comes to picking out candy for trick-or-treaters, 75% dark chocolate would be a better alternative to milk chocolate because dark chocolate contains various vitamin and minerals as well as, antioxidants.

Fruit such as, dates are a great substitute to use in desserts because they are a whole food and naturally have high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C.  Listed below are other great natural sweeteners and wont have your glycemic index sky-rocket when ingested in moderation.

  • Raw Coconut Nectar
  • Raw Honey
  • Organic Maple Syrup
  • Xylitol
